Not encumbered by retrofocus design requirement for reflex mirror or Leica M5 swinging arm sensor clearance this lens embodiment is arguably the best 21mm ever executed and it is much less expensive than the Leica 21mm f2.8 ASPH. that, it has been said, it is superior optically to despite the fact that its cost comes in at less than 1/3 of the Leica ASPH.
This highly symmetrical 1990's modern update of Bertele's groundbreaking 21mm f/4.5 Biogon of 1954 benefits from he decades of lens coating/grinding/formulation technology of the intervening decades. Unlike the 16mm Hologon, though the uncompromisingly designed 21mm protrudes deep into the G1/G2 chassis it does not interfere with off the film plane light readings (ambient or flash) or with the focusing system.
This very compact execution of a 21mm super wide angle has a impressively low claimed distortion figure of less than 0.5% .
