In the late 1950's Zeiss was an optical titan that dwarfed the Japanese new entries such as Nikon and Canon. The film magazine approach that Zeiss offered as an alternative economy to purchasing an entire body seemed reasonable until one compared it to the cost of an entire body from a Japanese manufacturer which it actually rivaled in cost. This disparity in relative cost pointed to the reasons for the ultimate failure of Zeiss in the larger marketplace.
