Though Nikon made a number of truly excellent pieces of optics, the "LEGEND" truly began with the introduction of the Nikon I in 1948.
The early "I" had a 32mm X 24mm film format which was closer to the 4X5 ratio of an 8X10 and would easily do 40 exposures on a 36 exposure roll (film was relatively expensive in post war Japan). The "M" (which stood for midway between 32mmX24mm and 36mmX24mm) followed in 1949 with a 34mmX24mm film format. There were evolutionary changes during the term of the "M" like the adding of flash contacts. And the "M" was followed by the "S" which was distinguished from later "Ms" only by the SN designation.
The S2 was the very first Nikon camera to have a modern 36mmX24mm film format and was followed by the S3, SP and S4. |
