| Nikonos is a line of rangefinder cameras manufactured by Nikon in 1963. They are capable underwater cameras based on a purchased French design by J. Cousteau & Wouters, branded "Calypso." The series included The Nikonos line included five models: Nikonos I (1963), II (1968), III (1975), IV (1980), & V (1984). The early Nikonos was used in Vietnam because it was one of the few that could be used in such a harsh environment. The Nikonos underwater lenses included a 15mm f2.8, 20mm f2.8 & 28mm f3.5. They were all designed to work underwater to the same depths as the bodies. Despite popularity within its niche, Nikon ceased development of Nikonos in 2001. |
