| Alpa was a Swiss camera manufacturer that branched out from another Swiss pasttime, watches. The cameras were all hand-made, and all-metal construction. While Alpa made great manual focus cameras and optics on par with Leica, they could not compete with the advances made by Japanese manufacturers in the 1970-1980s. Many of Alpa's lenses were sourced through premium lens makers such as Angenieux and Schneider. The company used the same mount during this entire time, and adapters now exist to leverage these lenses on even current AF bodies. They were eventually acquired by Swiss firm Capaul & Weber. Alpa currently manufacture premium medium format camera bodies using lenses by Rodenstock, and Schneider. |
