Contax G1 and Contax G2 Bodies |
| In 1994, Contax introduced something unique — an interchangeable-lens rangefinder that did not use the Leica mounts and focused electronically. Its successor, the Contax G2, sported improved autofocus performance and a series of new features and ergonomic enhancements. The crowning achievements of the system, however are the lens system and its overall compactness. Unlike SLRs, the Gs are not encumbered by considerations mirror box size/clearance. Lenses, and this is especially relevant for wide angle lenses, are system designed only to optimize optical performance. The interchangable lens rangefinder cameras (also called "mirrorless" cameras) such as the Sony NEX-5 are likely inspired by the Contax G series and share the benefits with respect to wide-angle lens design. |
