Perfect optics, perfect mechanics and very fine cosmetics as shown. This is one of those lenses that is distinguished by being superior to its more expensive big brother. It performs better in every respect to the more sought after 50mm on which it is based. Its formula is highly similar but consists only of the central section of each of the elements. This ironically results in overall better performance but at a lower price. |

A very careful study of the factory documentation provided by Zeiss of the respective f1.4 and f1.7 50mm Planars leads to an interesting set of conclusions. The factory specified focal lengths are 51.8mm and 51.9mm respectively. The 7/6 lens schematic diagrams are almost identical with the f1.7 appearing to be substantially a f1.4 with the edges cut short. The performance data plots: MTF, Relative Illuminance, and Distortion are nearly identical with all of the mostly subtle differences in favor of the f1.7.
The 50mm f1.7 Planar is not just a more economical lens, it is virtually identical but somewhat superior in every respect though at the penalty of 1/2 of an f-stop. The two (with the f1.7 shown first) are compared below:
BTW, a very similar optical design "trick" was performed in the derivation of the original f2.5 105mm (10.5cm) from the f2.0 8.5cm rangefinder lens resulting in a lens design that proved to be one of Nikon's historically successful lenses.

New in box with warranty papers as it came from the dealer Indistinguishable from new but no box or no papers or both Very close to new condition with only subtle signs of use or handling. Extremely nice condition but does show some handling and use but no hard use whatsoever. Excellent condition but shows some wear and use. Perfectly Excellent operating condition but cosmetics leave something to be desired. Usable but has mechanical, optical and cosmetic issues as indicated in individual descriptions Issues as indicated in individual descriptions Very significant conditions as indicated in individual descriptions. The lower end of this range is basically a paperweight that looks something like it might once have taken some pictures.
