Later sn (over one million) M2 in extremely nice condition except for its vulcanite which has issues as shown. The exterior satin chrome is very nice except for the base which has an abundance of shiny areas but no real scratches. The remainder has a population of sparse shiny areas that we have attempted to bring out in the photos with only limited success. The areas near the strap lugs are shiny and the corner on the right has a very small impact nick as well.
The vulcanite is in especially bad condition. The film door has a small piece missing from it upper right corner. There is a much larger section missing from around the film speed reminder dial. The right side of the body has suffered a large piece of vulcanite loss which was clumsily replaced by a former owner.
Superbly light mechanical wear and perfect operation. Completely CLA'd by our photo-metrology lab which has 40+ years of experience workin on Leicas. |

Initially the M2 was conceived as a stripped down M body aim at the economy market segment. It has an external manually resettable film frame counter. The earliest ones were produced without a self-timer and had a push button rather than a lever to enable rewinding of film. As an economy the exposure counter is an external exposed numbered mechanical wheel that has to be reset manually.
Production started at 926,001 in 1957, and ended at 1,165,000 in 1968 with total production approximately 82,000.
Though it was initially aimed at amateurs seeking a cheap entry to the Leica/Leitz system it quickly became a favorite of professionals who considered the 35mm focal length as their "normal" and wanted to use the 35mm without the encumbrance of "Goggles" or "Bugeyes". Further incentive was provided by the fact that the 35mm focal length offerings for SLRs had not yet evolved to the point where they were competitive with the contemporaneous rangefinder lenses.
