The 1948 35mm(3.5cm) f3.5 Summaron (circa 1948-60)

was Leitz/Leica's first post war designed lens and was intended to replace the very long in the tooth 4 element 3.5cm f3.5 Elmar which had been its first accessory interchangeable lens first supplied way back in 1930 when Leica first went interchangeable. While the original 3.5cm Elmar is fine stopped down to f8 its performance is comparatively shabby at wider apertures. The much improved and newer Summaron is a classic symmetrical double Gauss (6/4) formulation with front and rear singlets and cemented pairs on either side of the lens center.
The f2.8 version:

introduced in 1958 (circa 1958-74), employs new glass to advantage to extend the formula dimensions a half of an f-stop. The extended formulation achieves not only greater light gather ability but performs somewhat better than the f3.5 at wider apertures and the two versions perform similarly at f8 and smaller.
