Extremely rare unmodified authentic Leica II (Model D) ; has all of the original trappings of the earliest examples of this very first coupled rangefinder body. Back of body has rear access focus confirmation/adjustment peephole as shown, a very old artifact. "O" on nickel plated lens mount designating "Standard" mount. Serial number only 1648 beyond the very first one manufactured; Script "LEICA" trademark that looks to have been done via skilled freehand. No eyelets for carry/neck strap; "0" on lens mount surface for standard mount; "Lavatory Seat" rangefinder top cover; Engraved "Ernst Leitz Wetzlar" but no "D.R.P."; Completely CLA'd and all shutter speeds work and are positively accurate; Shutter curtains appear to be original period correct and may add to the body's collectible value. Brown Vulcanite is in admirable condition given the age of this example. Viewfinder is very bright and contrasty. Rangefinder is contrasty as well.

Circa 1932-48. Historically significant, this, the very first camera body to bear the "LEICA" trademark, is Leica's first camera body model with a built in coupled rangefinder. Introduced in 1932 in black and followed the following year with a chrome model. Extremely popular at introduction in its first year almost 22,000 blacks were produced, more than the total production of chrome bodies that were to be produced over the model's 17 year lifespan. It can be argued that modern 35mm photography really began with this particular camera body.
