Supplied with a very fine quality B + W KR3 warming filter. Perfect mechanics and optics. Gorgeous aesthetics. Calibrated in meters. This lens is a singular event. It is simply the sharpest 3.5 cm lens of its era. No lens of that focal length manufactured by Leica, Zeiss or any other maker was as sharp. It was the very best. It was historically significant in that it was unexpected excellence. Purchasers, thinking that, at best, they were obtaining a credible substitute for the lens that they wanted, got the lens that was distinguished by being the very sharpest and finest for its era. This particular lens formulation may also be distinguished by being one of Nikon's longest lived formulations. In a different physical embodiment it lived on as the standard lens for the Nikonos series of cameras, where because its simplicity, excellence and economy it survived for decades. |

The 3.5cm (35mm) F2.5
This lens was first conceived of and earliest development prototypes were of an F2.7 and F2.8 lens. But, surprisingly the glass curvatures combined with the particular glass formulations available to Nippon Kogaku at the time worked out to obviously good enough corrections to extend the formula to an F2.5 lens. (The seeds may have been sown here for the F1.8) The 3.5cm F2.5 is an amazingly good lens for its time. Some argue that it was, for a very long time, the very best 3.5cm focal length lens available from any supplier. It is that good. this formulation also has extremely low distortion.
On its introduction, at f2.5, it was the brightest lens of its focal length. When Nikon replaced it with the f1.8 as the brightest offering at 3.5cm, in the minds of many Nikon afficienados, it remained its best 3.5cm and possibly the very best 3.5cm available from any manufacturer.
This lens held the reputation for being Nikon's best "35" for a very long time. None of its slr lenses ever did measure up to it in many respects.
