This is a very rare early Nikkor lens for LEICA Screw Mount (LTM) in superb COLLECTIBLE condition. It is one more example of how Nikon early on changed this industry. Through the employment of volcanic derived rare earth salts in its glass formulations, Nikon achieved optical corrections that were not obtainable otherwise. This 3.5cm (35mm) F1.8 was simply the sharpest fastest lens of its focal length at its time. It comfortably exceeded the characteristics of competitive offering from Leica and Zeiss at the time. In the specific arena that it addressed, it was simply a better offering than any of the Summicrons or Summiluxes available from Leitz/Leica at that time. For Leica SM camera bodies, it, in many ways is the very best wide angle lens that you can lay your hands on. It is that simple. |

Introduced September of 1956 only less than 8000 of these beauties were produced during its approximate 8 years of active production. There were only three varieties and only the initial 100 or so were produced in all black with chrome mounting ring scheme. Most of the remaining production were produced with an aperture ring that went from black paint to chrome. A relatively small number of Leica SM versions of this lens formula were also produced.
As one of the very first lenses to employ "rare earth" lanthanum salts in its glass formula, this was one of the very first of a new generation of designs. Despite its very large maximum working aperture, it was extremely sharp and contrasty with very little vignetting wide open as well as over its full f-stop range of over more than 8 stops. It is an absolutely amazing lens design for its time.
