35mm (3.5cm) f3.5/f2.8 SM System Mount Summaron
The 1948 SM 35mm(3.5cm) f3.5 Summaron (circa 1948-60 1st released in SM then in M in 1954) was Leitz/Leica's first post war designed lens and was intended to replace the very obviously aging 4 element 3.5cm f3.5 Elmar which had a history of being its first real accessory interchangeable lens supplied way back in 1930 when Leica first went interchangeable. While the original 3.5cm Elmar is a satisfactory performer when stopped down to f8, its performance is comparatively inadequate at wider apertures. The much improved and newer design Summaron is a classic symmetrical double Gauss (6/4) formulation with front and rear singlets and cemented pairs on both sides of the lens center.
The f2.8 version
introduced in 1958 (circa 1958-63 in SM), employs newer glass to advantage to extend the formula dimensions a half of an f-stop. The extended formulation achieves not only greater light gathering capability but also performs slightly but measurably better than the f3.5 at wider apertures. The two versions perform similarly at f8 and smaller.
