Circa 1952 5cm F1.5 in very fine but not perfect condition as shown. Front element has fine cleaning marks. Optics and mechanics are otherwise near perfect. Aesthetics reveal past use as shown. This lens is a much better optical quality execution than its immediate successor the 5cm F1.4 Summilux.
The history of this lens is that it is the coated "ERNST LEITZ WETZLER" branded successor to the uncoated 5cm F1.5 Xenon made by Leitz under license from Schneider. It is a superbly sharp formulation. Leica was under a great deal of pressure at the time to come up with an F1.4 lens formulation because of various offerings from other manufacturers. It delivered its first SM 5cm F1.4 Summilux which, in all candor, was an embarrassment. The new formulation which was based on invalid optical extensions of the Schneider formulation only gained a very small fraction of an F-Stop at a penalty of significant optical quality loss. |

The 50mm f1.5 Summarit was introduced in 1949 as a coated post war replacement for the uncoated Schneider Xenon 50mm f1.5. Except for some minor optical design tweaking, it is substantially identical in design, it is a modified modified double Gaussian formulation with four central cemented elements; it has a front singlet and a split rear element.
Having a total of 10 glass/air interfaces, the Xenon embodiment had been criticized for its excessive flare and the new coatings technology, developed during the war, improved performance markedly.
Until the 1959 advent in of the 50mm f1.4 Summilux in the Leica lens line it was the fastest lens that Leica manufactured.
Over 65,000 were produced from 1949 to 1961, 39,181 to satisfy screw mount demand.
Some were assembled in Canada and so marked.
