5cm (actually 5.2cm)
Leica's earliest available light lens. Introduced in 1933 it was very advanced for its time. The Summar name is actually a recycling of specific nomenclature employed back in 1902 for a six element patented six element symmetrical formulation optical device with which it bears no resemblance and with which it should not be confused. This new Summar is an asymmetrical variation on a symmetrical double Gaussian formulation with an over sized front singlet and cemented central doublets and a rear singlet. Because of obvious the novelty of its light gathering ability, sales immediately took off and Leica sold over 100,000 (a very respectable number for that era) of them during the period leading up to the introduction of the 5cm Summitar f2, which was a lens formulation with significantly improved optical properties.
The 1933 Summar formulation has a front element that employs physically very soft glass that is very easily scratched or marked. As a consequence it is rarely found in excellent condition. As shown below the lens also has an early evolution mechanically oddly structured hexagonal aperture mechanism:
The Leitz/Leica internal name for this lens was "SUMUS".

New in box with warranty papers as it came from the dealer Indistinguishable from new but no box or no papers or both Very close to new condition with only subtle signs of use or handling. Extremely nice condition but does show some handling and use but no hard use whatsoever. Excellent condition but shows some wear and use. Perfectly Excellent operating condition but cosmetics leave something to be desired. Usable but has mechanical, optical and cosmetic issues as indicated in individual descriptions Issues as indicated in individual descriptions Very significant conditions as indicated in individual descriptions. The lower end of this range is basically a paperweight that looks something like it might once have taken some pictures.
