Extremely rare wartime production circa late 1942 Has fine cleaning marks elements on outside elements. Not unusual for species or this vintage. Early F-Stop 2, 2.2, 3.2, 4.5, 6.3, 9, 12.5 minimum sequence. Internal elements appear to be coated, which is consistent with wartime production when this technology was first being developed. May have seen military service since most wartime production was for military applications. Collapsible shaft very worn as shown. Otherwise, optically and mechanically in very fine shape. Completely CLA'd. |

50mm (5cm) f2 Summitar

The 5cm Summitar was Leica's fast normal lens produced from 1939 through 1955 until the superior early Summicrons replaced it. It is an evolutionary set of optical improvements over the Summar that it replaced. The front singlet is replaced by a hugely oversized cemented doublet. The most characteristic outward appearance of this lens is its large front lens dimension which calculates to just larger than f1.6 .
Prewar the lens surfaces were uncoated and f-stops were labeled for f 2, 2.2, 3.2, 4.5, 6.3, 9 and 12.5 . November 1945 early (soft) lens coatings were applied. During 1946 f-stop labeling changed to 2, 2.8, 4, 5.6, 8, 11 and 16 after serial number 601,000 .
During its approximate 16 years of production nearly 171,000 5cm Summitars were produced as follows:
1939 11168
1940 8949
1941 8460

Extremely nice condition but does show some handling and use but no hard use whatsoever. Excellent condition but shows some wear and use. Perfectly Excellent operating condition but cosmetics leave something to be desired. Usable but has mechanical, optical and cosmetic issues as indicated in individual descriptions Issues as indicated in individual descriptions Very significant conditions as indicated in individual descriptions.
