The (12/9) 21mm F2.8, Minolta's First Floating Element Design Lens
This was Minolta's third 21mm (actually it is 21.5mm) offering and its very first original optical design in this specific arena.
The first (ca 1962), a nine element in five group formulation, bears a very strong resemlance to the Zeiss Biogon that had been introduced a decade earlier. The second (ca 1965) resembles the more symmetric design formulation innovations of the Nikon 8/4 (ca 1959) reformulation of the 1952 Zeiss Biogon.
The first two designs are adaptations non retrofocus optical designs originally intended for rangefinder bodies and as such yield very fine optical results but cause the user to suffer the inconvenience of needing to lock up the reflex mirror.
Minolta's 21mm F2.8 is a minimum distortion extremely well corrected design. Extremely sharp, one of Minolta's finest wide angles from that era but described by users as "a bit on the heavy side but razor sharp from corner to corner...A lens that is very difficult to find on the used market as its optical quality that is simply marvelous."
With twelve elements in nine groups it is a non typical very successful extremely well corrected retro focus design execution. Later examples had much needed early Minolta multi coating, given its many glass/air interfaces
