Nikon FE2 Chrome/Black
In March of 1983 Nikon introduced the updated FE2 to replace and eliminate the problems presented by the original FE electronics. The low battery shutter failure mode was gone along with the battery test lever/LED that had been intended to prevent problems with diligent testing. Instead, with the new system, if the battery is too weak to operate the body's electronics, the body locks up unless/until the shutter speed is set to M250 or B. Features/changes comprise:
1. No battery test because the need for it is obviated.
2. +/- LED indicator in the viewfinder to warn if an exposure offset has be set.
3. Comprehensively configured proprietary hot shoe for TTL electronic flash metering/control.
(TTL flash circuitry only accurate in this generation from ISO 25 to 400 and display blinks as a warning outside of this range.)
Shutter speed automatically defaults to 1/250 if higher speed is set and circuitry detects "flash ready" condition
4. Mechanically governed M250 shutter speed when battery power not available.
5. Further improvement to the mirror damping scheme.
6. Camera body electronics (meter/shutter) will not operate until film is advanced to frame numbe one.
7. Stress/structured titanium shutter blades for shutter speeds to 1/4000 and X Synch at 1/250.
8. 1/3 stop brighter viewfinder image with new "2" series finder screens (no doubt inspired by a competitive after market offering.)
9. Exposure compensation can be set in 1/3 increments.
10. Metering system integrates flash and ambient light measures to give ideal "fill flash" effects.
