Perfect optical and mechanical condition. Earliest version of this lens with a factory update of the "AI" aperture ring. Cosmetically very nice reflecting only the lightest and most respectful use.
ABYSMAL Cosmetics reflecting harsh professional use, some of it without a protective filter. Lens body is engraved. This is definitely a user lens and not one for display. It is very ugly. The front coating has a number of marks to it though no actual scratches. The rear element has two very minor marks that are of no optical significance. Our various optical tests reveal that the lens performs essentially perfectly optically despite the marks that we have attempted to bring out in the illustrative pictures. The lens has no internal dust or haze, no oil on its aperture blades and operates essentially perfectly If you buy this lens and are disappointed with its performance you may return it for a refund. It is a bargain.
Perfect optics and mechanics. Near perfect aesthetics evidencing only the lightest of respectful use. Completely CLA'd. Last manual version of the long respected lens.
In April 1971 Nikon introduced this amazing optical triumph. Though the very first version did not have the characteristic "C" designation, it was one of the earliest unsung beneficiaries of Nikon's NIC coating technology. Having an abundance of glass/air area interfaces (8 groups and, hence 16 glass/air interfaces and with a relatively large amount of outer surface area) this optical design necessitated the NIC optical refinement to minimize internal reflections and maximize contrast.
Version 1: Onset SN280001 Deeply ribbed scalloped aperture ring. Similar but long, for ease of gripping, focus ring. Has early NIC coating but no "C" on the front spec and ID ring.
Version 2: "C" on the front ID ring in recognition of the NIC lens coatings. Ended December 1975 with SN327984.
Version 3: Onset SN335001 February 1976. New look with RIFR look and style.
Version 4: Onset SN450001 during 1977. Aperture ring converted to "AI" design.
Version 5: Onset SN575001 December 1981. Lens underwent significant redesign: 9/8 to 8/8; minimum focus distance went from 12 to 10inches and aperture control adopted to precision "AIS" design.

Very close to new condition with only subtle signs of use or handling.
Extremely nice condition but does show some handling and use but no hard use whatsoever.
Excellent condition but shows some wear and use.
Perfectly Excellent operating condition but cosmetics leave something to be desired.
Usable but has mechanical, optical and cosmetic issues as indicated in individual descriptions
