April 1962 Nikon commenced production of the original Photomic Finder for the "F". This replacement for the simple pentaprism obviated the need for use of a separate hand held meter in making accurate exposures and like the cross couple Nikon meter attachments linked f-stop and shutter speeds to light readings.
The original meter came in a total of twelve early variations.
Variations One (total of eight): Black or Chrome; Nikon NIKKOR (the latter for the German domestic market where Nikon was considered to be too close to the ZEISS "IKON" trademark). Flat meter battery cover or female thread thread (for diffuser and telephoto simulator tube)
The second set of variations came with a micro-switch substituted for the "flag" switch for four more permutations: Black/Chrome//Nikon/NIKKOR
